Der Symposiumsband Sound in the City enthält neun Beiträge, die sich mit den Klängen mitteleuropäischer Städte auseinandersetzen. Den Ausgangspunkt bilden zwei Keynotes: Kay Kaufman Shelemay beleuchtet Geschichte und methodische Herausforderungen der „urban ethnomusicology“, während Eva Becher Einblicke in „best practice-Projekte“ aus ihrer Tätigkeit im Kulturreferat der Stadt München gibt. Weitere Beiträge beschäftigen sich mit dem Aufsteirern in Graz und seiner Musik, der Irish-Folk-Szene in Graz und deren Verbindungen zum „Mutterland“ Irland, dem Einfluss der chilenischen Exil-Musik-Community auf das Berlin der DDR-Zeit und seine heutigen Nachwirkungen, dem Soundmapping-Projekt „Grazer Klang“, Musiziergewohnheiten von Kindern und Jugendlichen in der Steiermark in Stadt und Land sowie städtischen Liedern und Sprüchen aus dem 19. Jh., die der sexuellen Sphäre zuzuordnen sind. Obwohl Graz als Tagungsort in vielen Beiträgen im Mittelpunkt steht, werden dabei zahlreiche musikalische und kulturelle Bezüge auf andere Orte aufgezeigt – sowohl ländliche als auch städtische. Dadurch wird deutlich, dass sich der Klang einer Stadt aus einer Vielzahl von Stimmen und Klängen zusammensetzt, die unterschiedliche örtliche, historische und kulturelle Bezüge aufweisen, sich wechselseitig beeinflussen, konstant an die aktuellen Lebensrealitäten anpassen und so ständig in Bewegung bleiben. Erst dadurch wird – und bleibt – der Sound in the City lebendig. English: The symposium volume Sound in the City contains nine contributions that explore the soundscapes of Central European cities. It opens with two keynote lectures: Kay Kaufman Shelemay examines the history and methodological challenges of urban ethnomusicology, while Eva Becher provides insights into selected “best practice” projects from her work at the Cultural Department of the City of Munich. Further chapters address a wide range of topics, including the Aufsteirern festival in Graz and its music, the city’s Irish folk scene and its connections to its “motherland” Ireland, the influence of the Chilean exile music community on East Berlin during the GDR period and its memories and traces, the sound-mapping project Grazer Klang, the musical practices of children and young people in urban and rural Styria, as well as urban songs and sayings from the nineteenth century associated with the sexual sphere. Although the host city Graz is at the center of many contributions, numerous musical and cultural connections to other places are revealed – both rural and urban. Taken together, the essays demonstrate that the sound of a city emerges from a multitude of voices and sonic layers that reflect diverse local, historical, and cultural contexts, influence one another, continually adapt to contemporary realities, and thus remain in constant flux. Only through this ongoing transformation the sound in the city comes – and stays – alive.
