Description (de)
(KUG Klangdebüts KD 45, 1 CD) This was not the first time Graz acted as host for an IASJ Meeting, but then, the two meetings are hardly comparable. In 1993 the IASJ was just at the beginning of its successful history, and has since developed into a prospering, globally recognized, and still thriving organization. The experiences accumulated, through the repeated realization of these important annual events, have benefited each consecutive host. In 1998 the "Musikhochschule" advanced to a "University" and since the beginning of Prof. Georg Schulz as Rector in 2007, the Jazz Institute received its long deserved recognition as a "Special Focus" project of the University. This substantial support, for which I would like to express my explicit thanks, has made it possible for the Jazz Institute to provide everything needed for such an event, even over and above that which was required. First of all, the opening concert in the impressive venue "Dom im Berg", with a treasure such as Gil Evans' arrangements of "Porgy and Bess", gave the Meeting a flair of the exceptional. It is through the valuable support of the ORF (Austrian RTV) - and here a special thanks to Norbert Stadlhofer - that, in addition to the closing concerts of the students, the collaboration between the KUG Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Ed Neumeister, and our Artistic Director as an exceptional soloist, was recorded and broadcasted throughout Austria. Notwithstanding all these favorable external circumstances, there is always a need for persons who enable the success of such an event. I can say with pride that I had with Ingrid Windisch and Sigi Feigl two such supporters, who, with unwavering dedication during the last decades, lent on essential contribution to the development of the Jazz Institute and with Ed Partyka a director, who provided every possible support. These three names may represent the many colleagues who contributed to the success of this Meeting. I led the Jazz Institute for almost twenty yeras and have had the honor of being the Chairman of the IASJ for nine years. There has never been a better opportunity to step down from my position in the Association and clear the way for my younger colleagues. And so, after a successful Meeting, I am happy to do this - knowing that both, the Jazz Institute and the IASJ find themselves on an upcurrent.
